Just as human beings intrinsically possess 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-person perspectives of the world, so do we possess those same perspectives in our experience of spirituality. And while these dimensions of the divine can be found in just about any spiritual lineage—Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, Hindu, Islam, etc.—many of these traditions explicitly emphasize only one or two of these perspectives, resulting in one or more important aspects of spirituality often being left out of their conceptions of God.

Wanna get you some meditation, some peace, some wisdom? Wanna do a weekend program where you learn how to calm and open your mind to…reality? Buddhism–tested over 2,500 years in dozens of diverse cultures–is worth a go. This "non-theistic" (read: it’s up to you) religion comes in dozens of styles–Zen, Theravada, Tibetan–but it’s always, at its root, about learning to be a good, sane, peaceful, compassionate person. Still, finding the right teacher for you is an age-old task–made somewhat easier by online teaching schedules, hundreds of wonderful Buddhist books (why, only a generation ago there were only a few tomes to choose from).

As a young man seeking enlightenment, in the demanding and naive manner of a spiritual seeker with both a taste for God and a sense of entitlement, I protested at my spiritual advisor’s suggestion that I engage seriously in the practice of meditation.
Sitting on the zafu pillow, attempting to allow my thoughts to drift away and simply experience the stillness of the Divine, seemed an exercise in futility. As I focused on my breathing, as instructed, the details of work and relationships and the image of the enchiladas I was planning for dinner rushed into the emptiness. The practice seemed pointless. And sitting on the floor in a semi-lotus position made my back hurt.
I asked my teacher why she couldn’t simply tell me what it was that I needed to learn from the meditation practice. I asked why she couldn’t simply tell me what I needed to know in order to be enlightened. Her answer has stayed with me for decades.
She explained that enlightenment was like the yoke of an egg…

There has been much in the news about the interdependency of mind, body and spirit. Studies using brainwave technology measured actual physical changes in the brains of longtime meditators — Tibetan monks. Recently another study showed how meditators often fared better than their nap-taking counterparts in mitigating the effects of sleep deprivation. Yet another explores the myth of multi-tasking, concluding that single focus is ultimately more efficient, less prone to errors and less stressful that trying to attend to more than one thing at a time. Meditation as a practice using single focus trains us to be more mindful of competing demands for our attention and to choose wisely by virtue of that awareness.

Edgar S. Cahn is fighting for your right to be lazy.
The slow movement backs random acts of slowness, such as turning off the BlackBerry or spending time with friends.
Other activists might devote their time to reversing global warming or saving the whales. But the 73-year-old attorney is battling to preserve a commodity that he says is more fragile than the environment and more precious than oil — time.
Cahn is a leader in the “slow movement,” a national campaign that claims that speed kills. Its leaders say that Americans are so starved for time, our need for speed is destroying our health, families and communities…
“When you come to the edge of a cliff, the solution is not to run faster, we have to step back.” – Edgar Cahn
Practice random acts of slowness: turning off the BlackBerry, cooking unhurried meals with friends, cultivating a garden and taking long walks.

Lori Jewitt says, “It’s no strange coincidence that so many of us are looking for happiness. The more we have separated ourselves from nature and from each other, the more miserable we have become. We are struggling to find happiness, as if it is out there somewhere hiding from us. But it’s right where it has always been…we’ve just lost sight of it.”
Basic principles of Taoism:
- P’u – The Uncarved Block …A clear, calm open mind can makes sense, and make use, of what it sees. It doesn’t over-think things…
- Recognizing our Inner Nature - You need to understand who you are, what you can do and what you can’t.
- Wu Wei – Act wthout doing, making or causing.
- Slow Down - “The hurrier I go, the behinder I get.”
- T’ai Hsu – The Great Nothing.
Allow Lori Jewett to show how applying these Taoist principles can lead to a happier life. Read Lori’s complete article…
