There is an amazing presentation of the brain researcher, Dr Jill Taylor (1959-), about her own stroke in her left brain. You can watch her My Stroke of Insight presentation here. Her delivery is very passionate and professional, and she knows how to connect with the audience. She has also published My Stroke of Insight book but it contains mainly expanded explanation of all concepts she already covered in her 18 minutes talk above, so you may benefit from reading her book but do not expect too much…

‘9000 Needles’ director chronicles brother’s recovery from stroke
By Lisa Reicosky, GateHouse News Service

As a film director and producer living in Venice, Calif., Doug Dearth has worked on his share of big-budget films with teams of scriptwriters and large production crews.

The Ohio native’s latest project, a film called “9000 Needles,” was produced on a shoestring budget with a two-man crew working halfway around the world. But to Dearth, it is more important than any blockbuster could be.

His documentary chronicles the struggle of his younger brother, Devin, following a stroke at age 40. The stroke put Devin in intensive care and on life support for three weeks.

It touches on Devin’s wife, Stacey, and their battle with their insurance company, and chronicles the family’s decision to seek alternative treatment in China as he battled to walk, talk and overcome the stroke’s devastating effects. Read the complete article…

Born with half a brain, woman living full life

By Kelly Marshall and Eric Marrapodi, CNN

FALLS CHURCH, Virginia (CNN) — Michelle Mack has turned medical thinking upside down.

The right side of Michelle Mack's brain rewired itself to take over functions controlled by the left.

Born with only half a brain, Mack can speak normally, graduated from high school and has an uncanny knack for dates.

At 27, doctors determined that the right side of her brain had essentially rewired itself to make up for function that was likely lost during pre-birth stroke. But her childhood and young adult years were fraught with frustration.

“It was very hard for me,” Mack said. “It was very hard for me growing up. No one knew the truth about my brain.”

Mack’s parents, Carol and Wally, realized shortly after her birth that something was wrong.

“There wasn’t a group to turn to,” said Carol Mack. “Michelle didn’t have cerebral palsy, I knew that. She didn’t have Down’s syndrome, I knew that. I had no place to turn.”

Ten years ago, Dr. Jordan Grafman, chief of the Cognitive Neuroscience Section at the National Institutes of Health, finally diagnosed the problem.

An MRI scan revealed she was missing nearly half of the left side of her brain. While it was clear Mack has some problems, Grafman said he and the family were shocked by the extent of the damage.

  • Story Highlights
  • Doctor: Lesion “basically took away the left side” of Michelle Mack’s brain
  • Right side of her brain essentially rewired itself to take over left-side functions
  • She lost some language ability, emotional control because of the rewiring
  • Mack’s message to the world: “I’m normal but have special needs”

Pretreatment with electroacupuncture induces rapid tolerance to focal cerebral ischemia through regulation of endocannabinoid system.

Stroke. 2009 Jun;40(6):2157-64

Authors: Wang Q, Peng Y, Chen S, Gou X, Hu B, Du J, Lu Y, Xiong L

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Our previous study demonstrated that pretreatment with electroacupuncture (EA) induces rapid tolerance to focal cerebral ischemia. The present study was aimed to investigate the involvement of the endocannabinoid system in the early neuroprotection conferred by EA pretreatment in the animal model of focal cerebral ischemia. METHODS: Two hours after the end of EA pretreatment, focal cerebral ischemia was induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion for 120 minutes in male Sprague-Dawley rats or male C57BL/6 mice. The neurobehavioral scores, infarction volumes, and neuronal apoptosis were evaluated at 24 hours or 7 days after reperfusion in the presence or absence of AM251 (a selective cannabinoid receptor type 1 [CB1] receptor antagonist) or CB1 short interfering RNA. The expression of CB1 receptor and the content of endocannabinoids in the brains were also investigated. RESULTS: EA pretreatment reduced infarct size, improved neurological outcome, and inhibited neuronal apoptosis at 24 hours or 7 days after reperfusion. The beneficial effects were abolished by AM251. CB1 knockdown by CB1 short interfering RNA attenuated EA pretreatment-induced neuroprotection. EA pretreatment upregulated the neuronal expression of CB1 receptor in the rat brains and elevated the brain tissue content of the endocannabinoid 2-arachidonylglycerol and N-arach-idonoylethanolamine-anandamide. Pretreatment with 2-arachidonylglycerol and N-arach-idonoylethanolamine-anandamide also reduced infarct size and improved neurological outcome. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that pretreatment with EA increases the production of endocannabinoid 2-arachidonylglycerol and N-arach-idonoylethanolamine-anandamide, which elicits protective effects against transient cerebral ischemia through CB1 receptors. These results suggest a novel mechanism of EA pretreatment-induced rapid tolerance to focal cerebral ischemia.

When yoga harms instead of heals – Bad Karma

July 15, 2008

I remember only one pose from my first yoga class seven years ago: a modified seated forward bend known in Sanskrit as Paschimottanasana. I sat on a mat with my legs slightly bent in front of me, my arms wrapped beneath my thighs as my forehead reached toward my toes. It was about an hour into class, and my body felt like a stuck door slowly easing open.

Jill Bolte Taylor: My Stroke of Insight

July 2, 2008

[Facebook] [Google] [Twitter] [Windows Live] [Yahoo!] [Email]

Jill Bolte Taylor is a neuroanatomist. She studies the human brain. One December morning in 1996, Dr. Taylor woke up to discover that she was experiencing a rare form of stroke, an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in the left hemisphere of her brain. As the language and logic centers of the left hemisphere became incapacitated Dr. Taylor’s right hemisphere remained intact and observant.

Jill Bolte Taylor’s remarkable story about her nine year recovery from the stroke and the insights she gained into the workings of the human brain is one of the clearest and simplest explanations of how one may attain peace of mind in this life…without having a stroke! You can read about Jill Bolte Taylor’s journey in her book, My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey.

You can also see webcasts of her online. Her TED Conference video is an Internet sensation. Jill Bolte Taylor was one of Oprah Winfrey’s first guests on Oprah’s XM Satellite Soul Series webcast. The four part webcast series is available on www.oprah.com and also as a video or audio podcast on iTunes.

A Superhighway to Bliss

May 25, 2008

[Facebook] [Google] [Twitter] [Windows Live] [Yahoo!] [Email]

JILL BOLTE TAYLOR was a neuroscientist working at Harvard’s brain research center when she experienced nirvana.
But she did it by having a stroke.

On Dec. 10, 1996, Dr. Taylor, then 37, woke up in her apartment near Boston with a piercing pain behind her eye. A blood vessel in her brain had popped. Within minutes, her left lobe — the source of ego, analysis, judgment and context — began to fail her. Oddly, it felt great.

The incessant chatter that normally filled her mind disappeared. Her everyday worries — about a brother with schizophrenia and her high-powered job — untethered themselves from her and slid away.
Her perceptions changed, too. She could see that the atoms and molecules making up her body blended with the space around her; the whole world and the creatures in it were all part of the same magnificent field of shimmering energy.
“My perception of physical boundaries was no longer limited to where my skin met air,” she has written in her memoir, “My Stroke of Insight,” which was just published by Viking.

Stroke of insight: Jill Bolte Taylor on TED.com

May 3, 2008

[Facebook] [Google] [Twitter] [Windows Live] [Yahoo!] [Email]

Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor had an opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: One morning, she realized she was having a massive stroke. As it happened — as she felt her brain functions slip away one by one, speech, movement, understanding — she studied and remembered every moment. This is a powerful story of recovery and awareness — of how our brains define us and connect us to the world and to one another.
